Everything you need to know

A mission statement is an essential for any business. It should guide every decision you make about your interior design business.

I’m an interior designer. Do I really need to sit down and write a mission statement?
— Every interior designer I know

I hear you, doing this high level thinking can seem like a bit of a waste of time and a distraction from actually getting your hands dirty and doing the work.

It can seem unimportant but a well-crafted mission statement can help you focus on what is important in your business. It gives you guidelines for evaluating the way you do business and helps you to establish your brand. You can evaluate opportunities, new projects and decide if they fit in with your overall mission. Every action you take in your business should be guided by this statement.

So let’s get into it and write a mission statement for your interior design business.

There are a few key elements of a mission statement that will help you craft one that fits your business.

  1. Purpose: What is the primary purpose that your business exists? Keep this clear and focused and above all simple.

  2. Competency: What are the competencies that set you apart? What are your core capabilities?

  3. Motivating: Part of the function of a mission statement is to guide you when things get tough. By keeping your mission in mind, you can keep going. We have all watched movies where things go wrong for the hero, but they keep on going because they keep the mission front and centre in their mind.

  4. Persona: This encapsulates your business’ personality and makes your business unique. Your mission statement should sound like you and reflect your values.

I personally think that a mission statement should be no longer than 2 sentences. If a statement is any longer, how will you remember it. It should be a statement that is front and centre in your mind and trips off your tongue easily.

Some examples of mission statements for interior design businesses:

Personally, I think these mission statements are a bit long…but I like the ideas.

Our mission  is to positively influence the lives of all customers with whom we have the pleasure of working, and leave a lasting impression on their minds and imagination . Our designs must inspire and elevate the hearts and minds of all those who lay eyes on it. Our long-term goals are always in line with our core values. Our mission is to always go one step further – to offer an exclusive customer service to our clients

We exist to create the beautiful backdrops against which our clients experience their lives. We are honored by the trust clients impart to us to select the sofa on which emotional conversations will occur, a table on which a young artist will create many masterpieces, and a fabric which can evoke a specific memory 50 years later. Walls contain hope, joy, sadness, grief, and laughter; it is our privilege and our promise to design beautiful spaces within which to experience emotion and life.
