You're looking around for a website but you are amazed at how expensive it is. Back to the drawing board- let’s check out templates. You’ve checked out a few platforms- Wordpress, Wix , Showit and Squarespace and some of the templates look pretty good. Now the simple task of chosing a website platform and then building it is not looking like a small job, but a big one!

If you’ve read the title of this blog post, you would have been checking out the best Squarespace template for interior designers and you would have probably found out that I firmly advocate using Squarespace for Interior Designers, stylists and architects.

So why Squarespace?

Squarespace is one of the largest website building platforms around.

For interior designers, it has a few advantages:

  • It can display beautiful images, there is a lot of flexibility around its design and you can pretty much make it into anything you want.

  • It has drag and drop functionality. With Squarespace, WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get). This means that you can plan out your site before you even touch the platform and then go from there.

  • Once you have built your site in Squarespace, you can easily change its look and feel without having to refer back to a developer. Indeed, you can easily add functionality to your website- such as a shop or blog at any time, if initially the idea of doing this, in the beginning, is too overwhelming.

This is a huge advantage, as, like interiors, trends in web design are ever-changing. In three years, your website will be looking dated, and you may have to start the whole project yet again.

So why start with a Squarespace Template?

If you hop into Squarespace, you will be presented with a number of templates to choose from. These templates are all free and though they look really different, are basically versions of the same template. Yep, you heard me, they are all built on exactly the same foundation. They just look different.

What’s the difference between Squarespace 7.0 and Squarespace 7.1?

A few years ago, Squarespace used a different platform called 7.0. In this version, you did have to choose a template that had specific functionality and this meant that if you changed your mind later, you had to change templates- a whole lot of work!

So the engineers at Squarespace listened and now every template 7.1 is based on the same common elements. All the templates listed are just different ways that you could build out your website.

So - no more design paralysis- if you want a website, you can start building and change the design later.

So which templates should I choose in Squarespace if I am an interior designer?

I would always start all my designs with a blank template. This is the easiest and most flexible and is simpler than it sounds.

Firstly, you don’t have to delete all the parts you don’t need. This can be a bit annoying.

Secondly, the format of an interior design website is quite simple. You need 6 pages. That’s it. However, you can add more if you want to now or later.

Umm, that sounds really hard. Can we just start with a template?

So which Squarespace template for interior designers would you choose?

We can look at this in a few ways:

The Bergen Template is amongst one of the most popular choices for the best Squarespace Templates for Interior Designers

By Industry…

When you go into Squarespace, it will lead you to a page that asks you what industry you are in. If you choose Architecture or Interior Design, you will be given a number of options- the most common are the Bergen, Ventura and Utica templates.

These are portfolio style templates. The Bergen template is basically a mockup of an interior design firm which makes it pretty easy to visualise your branding. This ease of branding means that if a lot of interior design firms are choosing this template, you will all look the same.

Well yes. And, no.

With Squarespace, you can pretty much change everything, from the fonts to the buttons, to the background colours. Some canny design changes like this mean that even though you are using a standard template, it can look really different.

Another way to start is by just choosing one you like.

Studio Luxicon Interior Design site

Remember, every Squarespace site is based on the same elements so you can just pick something you like and change the design as you go. The problem with this is there may be quite of lot deleting that has to be done to get the site to fit an interior design use case. However, as long as you have the basic layout correct, you will be able to change anything if you change your mind.

My preferred choice, as I have said before, is to draw up your website on paper or make a mockup in Canva, and start with a blank template.
