5 Ways to Make Money with SketchUp for Interior Designers and Architects

Everything you need to know

  • reach out to interior design firms as a freelancer

  • create assets

  • contribute your renders

So you have spent a lot of time learning Sketchup and you have invested in a SketchUp pro account. There are many ways that you can start using your SketchUp skills to not only practice and become better but also to make some income if your business is a little slow.

  1. Reach out to interior design or architecture firms as a freelancer

Interior designers and architects may need some help when it comes to planning and documentation. Why don’t you contact interior designers or architects in your local area and see if they need help? You can contact them by email, or reach out to design professionals via LinkedIn. Another great way to reach out to them is via interior design Facebook groups. They may need someone to help them create initial documentation at design consultations or may need help with translating their notes into drawings.

2. Create 3D models for sale

I’m always looking for a good model that I can use in my designs or for practice. Start creating models for free in SketchUp warehouse so you can showcase your skills and then put your models onto sites such as Turbosquid. Interior designers and architects may also want specific models for their work and you can reach out to them to see if there is anything they need.

3. Create floorplans for Real estate agents

The real estate business is booming and every property for sale needs floor plans. Create a simple site offering floor plans made in Sketchup. Reach out to local real estate agents via LinkedIn or email, linking to your website. This is also a good way for local agents to get to know you and see your technical skills while introducing them to your interior design services.

4. Create renders for Interior Designers

Develop your SketchUp skills and learn 3D rendering with programs such as Enscape or VRay. Learning 3D rendering can take time and practice but can be quite lucrative. Clients are willing to pay for detailed 3D renders. Create a portfolio page on your website to showcase your skills and contact interior designers through LinkedIn or via interior design Facebook groups.

5. Stock photo sites

You may have already created some beautiful models and renders. Why not adapt these models, render them and then submit them to stock photo sites such as Getty Images. Start by submitting a few to free footage sites such as Unsplash or Pexels, then submit to the larger paid sites. You might not make a fortune but it could be a source of income of a few hundred dollars per month.

The great thing about SketchUp is that the more you use it, the better you become. SketchUp is an amazing tool for visualisation and those skills are in demand. Visualisation is one of the most time-consuming parts of design.
